Sub 4 Hour Marathon
Sub-4:00 Marathon Training Plan (Beginner, 6-Month Plan)
For beginners ready to take on their first marathon and finish strong under 4 hours.
A marathon is a different kind of challenge for a beginner, not just a longer race, which is why this plan runs 6 months instead of the usual 10 to 12 weeks. Your body needs time to adapt to the mileage safely, and rushing that process is how injuries happen. The first two months are run/walk only, no pace targets, just building the habit and letting your joints and connective tissue adapt gradually.
From there, the plan moves through continuous running, longer weekend runs, and gradually rising endurance, only introducing pace in month 5 once your base can actually support it. The long run builds steadily toward race distance, including race-pace practice late in the plan, so nothing on race day feels unfamiliar.
What’s included:
- 6-month structured plan, 3 sessions per week
- Progressive run/walk to continuous running transition
- Long runs building up to 150 minutes
- Race-pace practice built into the longest runs
- Guidance on fueling, hydration, and race-day kit
- Built-in taper and race week
Best for: True beginners with little to no running background who want a safe, structured path to their first marathon finish, not a plan borrowed from someone who’s already running regularly.
